2024 Europe has voted - now what?

This event was held in German

The European elections of 6-9 June took place in the midst of a super election year, with nearly 80 countries around the world holding elections. Interest in the European elections was high and voter turnout increased. The elections are also seen as an indicator of the current geopolitical situation. This is due to events such as the war in Ukraine, the potential escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran and the need to tackle climate change. The predicted gains of Eurosceptic and right-wing populist parties in these elections turned out to be far less dramatic than expected.

Against this background, the Swiss Democracy Foundation and the Polit-Forum Bern organised a panel discussion in the Käfigturm in Bern as part of the exhibition 'SchwEUz - Can we have Switzerland and the EU?

Among others, the following questions were discussed:

How did the EU elections go? What impact will the results have on the future role and identity of Europe? What does it mean for democracy in Europe? To what extent can the European elections be seen as a barometer of public opinion for the global super election year?
